A great philosopher once told his beloved, 'I love you not because you are beautiful. You are beautiful, because I love you.' That seems to be most likely the case in the 150th issue of Elle. The magazine and Lara Dutta complement each other so very well, that it's totally impossible to say that who is mirroring whose grace and poise.

Needless to say, the 150th issue is really something to treasure about. In cliche words, one can call it as the 'Collector's Item'. This issue has Lara Dutta, 'The Mistress Of the Universe' (as the magazine calls her), who is shuffling her time between writing, meditating, horse riding, fashion... and yes...Bollywood, the place which will look like a vacuum without her presence! This issue has the gorgeous Lara getting into a nostalgic mode as she says, "As a child, my dream was to wear beautiful clothes with lots of make up and get photographed, which is more of a model thing than an actress". She also goes on to confess that when she was in class 7, she was merely 5 feet 1 inch in height. In just two years, she 'shot' upto a towering 5 feet 8 inches!

All this and mush, mush more....we mean...much, much more...only in this latest edition of Elle...truly an 'Elle-gant' issue by all means!

I will cry if Blue flops: Anthony D'Souza

Audiences will not cry when they watch Blue but if it goes wrong, I will Anthony D'Souza tells Jyothi Venkatesh. Are you scared that Blue is being released in competition with All The Best and Main Aurr Mrs Khanna? I really wish that I could say that I am not at all worried about competition and pray that more films should be released during Diwali, because I welcome competition. But the truth is that I am scared, because there are only good films and bad films and not big films and small films. Bollywood tends to be incestuous, because though we keep on bickering, at the end of the day we end up hugging one another. I wish that All The Best, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna and my own film Blue had been released one after the other separately, without cutting into each other�s throats. Can you elucidate? I have not shown my four year old son the promos of All The Best, because if I show him the promos of All The Best, he will like to see All The Best and not Blue. How big is Blue according to you? I still honestly have not realized how big is my film Blue, because at heart, I am a kid who feels that he is getting paid for blowing up cars. Were you not scared to shoot with real sharks? I was not at all scared to shoot with real sharks and whales because I feel that the most dangerous species on this earth is not the sharks but Man himself. Which are the directors who you admire a lot? Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kahsyap and Shriram Raghavan are the directors who I admire a lot. However, if you were to ask me whether I�d be able to compete with them, all that I can say is that I would not. Instead I�d like to stick to my strength. What is your strength as a director? Visuals, style and flamboyance are my strengths as a director. How did you bag the opportunity to direct your debut film? I am a new director and had never even assisted any filmmaker before I bagged the opportunity to direct Blue. To my credit, I have only directed 75 ads and 25 music videos. I had also directed the 52 episodes of the popular TV show Ripley�s Believe It Or Not. It was thanks to John Abraham, who I had literally hounded almost for three years from the time he had made his debut with Jism, who put me in touch with producer Dhilin Mehta of Shri Ashtavinayak Films. Why did you not cast John Abraham in your film? When Dhilin asked me whether I wanted to cast John in my film, I told him that I did not want John because his image as a biker is still too storing after Dhoom and hence I wanted Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt in my film. It was Sanjay who suggested that I cast Zayed as his brother in the film. Zayed is fabulous in my film as an actor. It is a pity that he has still not been exploited to his maximum potential. In what way is Blue similar to Jaws? Blue is similar to Jaws, Abyss and Deep, only as far as sea and action are concerned, not as far as it�s concept is concerned. Would you agree that Blue lacks the emotional quotient? Yes. Emotional quotient is lacking in Blue because it is a film which will not make you cry. It is a roller coaster ride to great entertainment. If it flops, of course it is, I who will end up crying. The only person, who should be blamed if the film goes wrong, is me. What kind of films do you want to make as a director? I want to make films which kids of five would see, laugh and jump. I do not have the sensibility to make art films like Uski Roti, because I remember when I went to watch that film, a guy who was bored with the film started walking in the theatre from left to right almost throughout the show. What is your ambition as a film maker? My ambition is to make a dark romantic film, because I believe that true lovers will never have a happy ending. Romance cannot be happy by itself because two human beings can never be the same. Even a marriage can survive only when one of the two is ready to make compromises. I am married and my marriage is a success because my wife was ready to make compromises. Do you plan to make a sequel to Blue? Blue does have an open ending, but it is not intentional. Whether to make a sequel or not is a call which will be taken by Shri Ashtavinayak Productions who have spared no pains to make the film the costliest in the history of Indian Cinema. Have you planned your next film? My next venture will also be an action packed film, though it will be in an entirely different league. Besides having Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Zayed Khan, Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif, my next film will also have three more big stars. Will it also be a multi star film like say Salaam E Ishq? Spare me. I am not a sensible director like Nikhil Advani to set out to make a film like Salaam-E-Ishq. Shall I say all the best to you while signing off now? Please tell me All The Blue and All The Best, because I have directed Blue and not All The Best. (Chuckles)

Blue - Movie Review

Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Zayed Khan, Lara Dutta, Katrina Kaif Kylie Minogue Director : Anthony D'Souza Rating: **** When the makers of a film proudly proclaim their product to be at par with their Hollywood counterparts, one is bound to be sceptical. More so because "Blue" is an action film, that too set underwater, which is not just a first in Bollywood but also a rarity in Hollywood. So does "Blue" set new standards for Bollywood action movies? Does it actually get into the underbelly of the sea and show a world hitherto unexplored? The answer is yes. Let's put it this way - "Blue" may not be the mind-blowing commercial action thriller that you would have ever seen. However, it certainly is the most innovative attempt that deserves to be acknowledged and lauded. Action is truly the USP of the film and keeps the momentum going for "Blue" due to which one doesn't quite miss the presence of a solid storyline. From first till the last frame, it's the amalgamation of action and an unknown world (under the sea) which brings in a novelty factor. For those hunting for a storyline, "Blue" actually begins and ends at the basic synopsis level. Mr. Richie Rich Akshay Kumar wants a treasure to be explored and entices his employee and friend Sanjay Dutt with tempting offers. Dutt is reluctant to take that dive into the sea even though his girlfriend Lara Dutta and brother Zayed Khan do present him enough reasons to take the plunge. Eventually he relents and the journey of "Blue" begins. Simple. There are five key action sequences that keep the pace up for the film. Each of the three bike sequences featuring Zayed become better and better and in fact his introduction a la 'Fast and the Furious' is something unique for an Indian film. The boxing ring sequence featuring Sanjay and Akshay does hint of "Broken Arrow", though it works in establishing their characters. Most importantly, the entire underwater hunt sequence is a breathtaking affair. Anthony D'Souza has a strong eye for visuals and that shows. Technically, whether it is camerawork or sound, "Blue" bears an international feel. Whether it's Sanjay or Akshay, the revelation about their past isn't quite hammer strong, even though convincing. Moreover, even though the film is a multi starrer, one does expect Akshay to be on the forefront. However, for a change, a film featuring him does allow equal screen space for other actors as well. As for Lara and Katrina Kaif, their presence is required to make the film look good and in that aspect, they do well. In a nutshell, "Blue" is made for those who want pulsating action, innovative stunts, glamour and some unbelievable moments that defy logic. It mainly caters to the youth that just want some non stop action in those two hours while keeping James Bond movies in mind. The kind of films where bikes are meant to race through traffic, cars are meant to explode, women are meant to bring on a glamour quotient, villains are meant to be suave, action is meant to belong to never-seen-before variety and technical aspects are meant to be superior to the best.

Blue is coming to the UAE first!

Bollywood mega-starrer will have its world premiere at the third Middle East International Film Festival in Abu Dhabi

Expect the best of world cinema at the third Middle East International Film Festival to be held from October 8 to 17 in Abu Dhabi. And Bollywood will be represented by none other than Blue, the Akshay Kumar-Sanjay Dutt-Lara Dutta-Katrina Kaif movie that features Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue in a special song appearance. The promos of the movie are already burning up our TV screens, so we can�t wait to see the film.

All of MEIFF �s gala screenings will be held in the Auditorium of the Emirates Palace Hotel , with some of them receiving second screenings at Cinestar Cinemas at Marina Mall.

I'm extremely fond of Lara: Riteish Deshmukh

"My camaraderie with Lara is excellent and I am extremely fond of her. I have worked with her before; so I share a certain rapport with her," Riteish told us in an interview.

'Do Knot Disturb' is his third film with the former beauty queen after 'Bardaasht' and 'Masti'.

"As colleagues it is important to have on-screen chemistry and when you are doing comedy it is important to have the right timing and everything. Both of us understand that.

"It's great that there are times when we got a scene and we didn't need to rehearse because I know exactly what Lara is going to do and she knows exactly what I'm going to do," added the actor who is also doing Sajid Khan's 'Housefull' with the actress.

'Do Knot Disturb' also stars Govinda and Sushmita Sen and is slated to hit screens Oct 2.

The 30-year-old actor, who has emerged as a comic star after doing a series of comedies like 'Masti', 'Dhamaal', 'Heyy Baby' and 'Kyaa Kool Hai Hum' among others, revealed that his dream of working with Govinda was realised when he was offered this film.

"I always wanted to work with Govinda and David Dhawan. I'm glad that both these people came together in a single film."

So was he insecure or nervous about working with the king of comedy?

"Insecurity comes in when there is competition. In my head it is very clear that Govinda is a far superior actor. He is an institution. You cannot compete with him. Once you understand this, you are free to do as you wish and there is freedom to give your best," he said.

But at the same time Riteish admits while shooting for the laugh riot he was on his toes.

"I was always on my toes because Govinda is such a good actor that you don't want to let him down or let the scene down because of your incompetence. I tried to do as good as possible so that I can match up to his talent and calibre. I didn't want people to say that Govinda is doing so well, but Riteish is spoiling it," he added.

When asked about his reason to stick to mainly comic capers, Riteish, who started his career in 2003 with 'Tujhe Meri Kasam', says that it is not a deliberate attempt to limit himself in one genre.

"Doing comedies is not a deliberate attempt. When certain films work, those are the kinds of offers that keep coming to you; that's the reason why I feature mostly in laugh riots," elucidated Riteish.

"But I'm glad that now I have some films which are not comedies. So I'm looking forward to other genres. It's important for these films to do well so that more such films get offered to me."

Riteish will be seen in three non-comedies that include 'Aladin', 'Rann' and 'Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai'.

Lara maintains her weight at 58 kg

David Dhawan is mighty impressed!

Director David Dhawan just can't stop raving about beauty queen-turned-actress Lara Dutta for maintaining a weight of 58 kg since her debut in Bollywood with the 2003 movie "Andaaz".

The director is so impressed that he calls her "Miss Perfect 58".

"David calls Lara Perfect Miss 58 and is completely amazed how the actress has maintained 58 kilos for last six years. Lara has one of the best figures in the showbiz and is also an amazing actress," said a source close to the unit.

Dhawan is extremely fond of Lara's acting and comic timing. He was so impressed by her work in his 2007 hit "Partner" that he decided to cast her again for his forthcoming film "Do Knot Disturb".

Lara and Katrina turn down Govinda

Akshay and Katrina are such good friends that Katrina agreed to be his arm candy in De Dana Dan. However, she doesn�t share the same equation with her Partner co-star Govinda.

Govinda has had two flop films, Chal Chala Chal and Money Hain Toh Honey Hain. His last hit was Partner in 2007.

Obviously, he has high expectations from Life Partner which is produced by Abbas Mustan and directed by Rumi Jaffrey. He is the only senior member in the cast that comprises Fardeen Khan, Tusshar Kapoor, Genelia D�Souza and Prachi Desai. All these actors don�t have star power as such. So for a promotional song, Govinda tried to his influence and contacts to rope in Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif but they both refused. The two actresses appeared on Koffee with Karan together and were last seen with Chi Chi in Partner. Also, Govinda is a good friend of Salman. He thought Katrina would agree because of the Salman connection but she refused citing date issues. Over the past month, she was busy with New York promotions, post production for Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani, a few endorsement events and then she left for Europe to celebrate her birthday. Katrina has never done item songs, anyway. She wants to be seen as a serious actress so why would she do item songs?

Lara Dutta who has also done the upcoming Do Knot Disturb and Banda yeh Bindaas Hai with Chi Chi refused citing date problems. She is currently in London shooting for Sajid Khan�s Housefull. The last item song Lara did was Aisa Jadoo Daala Re in Rajkumar Santoshi�s Khakee in 2004. It was a big hit. She was also part of Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi as no smart person would refuse SRK and YRF. The song is quite popular.

Since these ladies refused the song, they had to rope in wannabe hottie Amrita Rao of Shortkut (fame?) to do the item number. The music of Life Partner is not a rage at all.

What can we say, Govinda�s career is on the downslide and no one wants to work with a fallen star. And everyone isn�t as lucky and powerful as Shah Rukh Khan to get three stars for three different item songs as he did with Kareena, Priyanka and Deepika in Billu. Our advice to Chi Chi would be to do more films with David Dhawan and Salman Khan and lose some weight to get his career back on track.

Lara stumbled upon a tattoo design of a rose with a Maori symbol and decided to get it inked on her right ankle. She says, "As soon as I saw this one, I completely fell in love with it and knew that this was going to be it. The pain was worth it because the tattoo artist did a magnificent job." After all Lara was given the Hollywood touch by the same make-up artist who was behind Keira Knightley's look in Pirates of the Caribbean.

Lara says, "The film required a make up artist who could handle make up for under water sequences as well as special effects for the action sequences and give the character an glamorous beach babe look, that was also very natural looking.

Nikoletta Skarlatos, who has worked on Transformers as well as Pirates of the Caribbean came very highly recommended by the International action team. She and Clarabelle Saldhana have put the whole look together for make-up and hair.

They have done an amazing job and I am extremely thrilled with the results". Is it possible for the ex-Miss Universe to look even more radiant than she does already? We'll just have to wait and watch to find out.

Poisonous Snake in Lara's Room, SRK faces Hell

Priyadarshan's dream town Pollachi where he shot some of his favourite films turned into a bit of a nightmare last week when heavy rains disrupted the shooting of Billo Barbar at a time when Shah Rukh Khan's dates were in the imminent danger of being wasted.

And if you think that was the end of Priyan's ordeal, here's more. One night an extremely poisonous snake entered Lara Dutta's room in Pollachi.

Recounts her co-star Irrfan Khan, "To her credit, Lara handled the situation very sensibly and bravely, probably because she didn't know how poisonous the snake was. If it had bitten her it would've been disastrous.

But then Lara is nothing if not spunky. I've realized that facing the camera with her was as challenging as co-starring with Tabu or Dimple Kapadia. Lara is the most underrated actress I've worked with."

More problems for Lara. Apparently her mom has taken ill very seriously.

Says Irrfan, "I could sense she was tense and dealing with a situation on the phone. But she never let it affect her work."

It wasn't just Lara who faced tough times in Pollachi. Shah Rukh and Irrfan Khan together with Lara Dutt faced hell and high water.

Priyadarshan just about managed to wrap up Shah Rukh's work before the mega-star had to leave to get back to Mumbai.

Says Irrfan, "Pollachi is one of the most peaceful spots in the world. Though prone to the monsoon vagaries that grip Kerala at this time of the year, never did we imagine that the weather could act so unpredictable."

Recounting their harrowing experience Irrfan says, "Suddenly during the last two days the weather acted up more than all of us who were facing the camera, ha ha. We were in a panic.

Because there was no way Shah Rukh could delay his departure. Priyan had to wrap up his work at any cost by Sunday. So we had no choice but to shoot through the rain. Which was harrowing. "

On the bright side SRK seems to have won himself even more friends.

Says Irrfan fondly, "Shah Rukh is as entertaining off camera as he's on screen. We all bonded big time. Now that he's no longer with us in Pollachi we find that spark is gone out of the unit. Seldom have I missed a co-star after shooting with him or her. Shah Rukh, I'm missing."

Irrfan has his family over in Pollachi. "I always take my wife and two sons to as many outdoors as possible, even if it means making my kids skip school. It's the only way we have of finding time together. In fact I'm out of Mumbai shooting till the end of the year. And I'll try to get them to come with me whenever possible."
